This is the wackiest, most adorable and humorous AU I’ve ever read. Even if you’re not into AU, I can’t recommend it enough. It’s choc-full of BBC-canonical lines that made me laugh out loud on many occasions.

Based at NASA during the initial tests of the Mars Rover craft, Rover driver Mike Stamford has nicknamed the Spirit Rover ‘John’ in memory of a friend who died in Afghanistan. Mike is concerned about the ‘character quirks’ that the Rover is developing, including a dodgy wheel (‘damn his wheel’!). When Mike meets Mycroft Holmes of Oversight – although Mycroft claims that he simply occupies a minor position in the US government – Mycroft suggests that the Opportunity Rover should be nicknamed ‘Sherlock’ in memory of his late brother. When the two Rovers are activated and start communicating with each other, their ‘conversations’ and relationship become surprisingly – and hilariously – familiar.

The story is in four chapters, and it’s definitely worth sticking with for the time when the Rovers arrive on Mars and start communicating with the orbiting craft Odyssey. I almost fell off my chair laughing when I realised who that craft was based on!

Whether or not you like a 221B fic, your mind will be blown as you read this. Stick with it to the end – I practically fell off my chair laughing.
