I think Moriarty is the sociopath Sherlock claimed to be.
In HLV we saw glimpses of Sherlock as a child (yes it was in his mind palace so the reality of it is questionable but I think it was at least based on a memory.) he wasn't as cold as he was at the beginning when he met John.
Moriarty killed somebody when he himself was just a child. (Moriarty was born in 1976 and Carl died in 1989 which makes him 13. And it wasn't a crime of passion, it was planned.)
Sherlock tried to get people to solve that murder even than (and he is younger than Moriarty). He was always "on the side of the angels". I don't think Moriarty could have changed that even if they meet in a different way without John to be "moral compass".
I believe Sherlock got hurt one too many times. At first he lost the dog he obviously loved and than there is the other sibling (god knows what happened to him but I doubt it was pleasant) and who knows who else in what way.
I guess for Sherlock it seemed easier to pretend he was a sociopath. That way he had an excuse not to let people get close to him so he couldn't get hurt again. It was a defence for him.
(I hope this makes sense)
Did you consider that Moriarty maybe had an 'eviler twin'? :))
