Re: the 'other sibling'. I discussed this with my actual siblings and decided that 1- the sibling would have had to be older than Mycroft (b'c if he/she came in-between, that person would have been going to school with them when they were younger; and b'c while Mycroft has the older sibling down pat perfectly, it actually makes sense in that a- I have 2 older siblings very close in age and both have that sort of oldest sibling attitude & b- if there was something off about whomever this person was, Mycroft would have had to assume all the oldest sibling responsibilities and thus it would revert again to what I said re older siblings anyway); 2- if the sibling had emotional/psychological problems, the Holmes might have sent him/her away if he/she was a danger to the others and if the problems became so serious later in life, apparently Mycroft allowed the secret government to 'get rid of' that sibling; 3- if the sibling was as bright as all other Holmes' children but had lesser emo/psych problems then I was suggesting BUT it included similar drug addiction problems that would allow him/her to give away government secrets, see number 2 (Sherlock would never do that, if he knew the secrets, b'c as we noted, he actually is on the side of the angels, willing to fight to the death for two years to rid the world of enemies/treasonous foes, instead of just allowing 'someone else' to deal with the mess).

(I hope that made sense.)
