Some details for 301

How about some general spoilers for Sherlock 301?

Gatiss: Faked death enrages Watson

Sherlock star and co-writer Mark Gatiss has revealed Dr Watson may not be pleased to see Sherlock, when he returns from the dead in the new series.

The last cliff-hanger episode of the hit TV show saw Sherlock, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, and nemesis Moriarty plunge to their apparent death from the roof of St Bart's hospital in London.

Gatiss revealed that, as in Sherlock Holmes author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's story 'The Adventure Of The Empty House', Sherlock will surprise his friend Watson, played by Martin Freeman, when he reveals he faked his death. And Watson won't be quite as understanding as he was in the original story.

Gatiss said: "There's certain things about 'The Adventure Of The Empty House' which feel set in stone because that's how Sherlock comes back, but at the same time we feel free to invent and to introduce new stuff to it.

"I always found it a little unlikely that Dr Watson's only reaction was to faint for instance - as supposed to possibly a stream of terrible swear words."

The League Of Gentleman star revealed he and co-creator Steven Moffat take a "magpie approach" when sourcing material for the TV series from among the original 56 short stories and four novels when writing the show.

He said: "Everybody has their favourites, Steven and I have our all-time favourites, but it's really a question of what will fit into the structure. We're sort of guided by our idea for the overall feel of the next three stories."

Personally, I would really like for John to punch Sherlock. Just once. One good, solid punch and then start to move on from there.

very exciting. any idea when series 3 will air or start filming?

Rebecca Eaton said 2013, and said PBS would air Season 3 in 2013 (I think) so maybe this means PBS airing won't be five months after UK? we can only hope.

While I'm all for John being ticked off at Sherlock and even throwing a punch or two, there's a part of me that's dreading it just because I don't want to see it turn into yet more of an epic fandom angst-fest if they decide to drag it out for too long.

Plus, in the BBC version, Sherlock had a very legitimate reason to fake his death (why should John be angry about being taken out of a sniper crosshairs?), whereas ACDverse Holmes really didn't have a leg to stand on there. If anything, I would rather have seen the scenarios reversed in the two universes. :/

But either way, WOOOT for any news at all about S3! *\o/*

I was thinking the same thing. I am probably the only person who doesn't really want John to punch him; physical violence isn't going to make however many years they make it worth of emotional trauma feel any better. Yes, I want John to be angry because he has every right to be, but I'd much rather see him verbally rip Sherlock a new one and then hug the stuffing out of him because John did, after all, ask Sherlock to stop this and not be dead. But, since they're men written by men, I'm sure there will be punching.

I'm going to be a little optimistic. They've found clever ways of updating the series, and I hope they don't go the all-too cliched and obvious route of punching. Of course, that may depend on Moffat, since he went a terribly unimaginative route with 2.01 But I've mostly forgiven him for that one.

However John reacts, I hope Sherlock actually talks to him, instead of his usual "hope John is bright enough to put it all together" approach. I have to agree that if Sherlock is contrite enough and explains, that John will have to forgive him. He has to make John see that he did it because he cares so much, not because John didn't mean enough to tell.

I also agree that I don't want to see this turn into something that gets between them so they end up like ADC's Holmes and Watson. (When Holmes "died", Watson hadn't even talked to him in a year. I don't think Watson was completely broken by Holmes dying because Watson had a wife and a job and hadn't been part of Holmes's life in forever.) What I like about this show is that as different as they are, they care about each other so much and if John had to move out because he resented Sherlock for faking his death, I'd have to throw a tantrum worthy of Sherlock.

All that said, I trust Mark Gatiss and I an really interested to see how John deals with this.

Thanks for sharing the story!

There is only one way John can ever forgive Sherlock for faking his death......and that's through lots of sex *G* Bring on the smut :)

:::Laughs very hard::: I love your plot idea. Yes, I think that should be exactly how Sherlock makes it up to John. :)

I'd really like to see Sherlock come back in disguise, as he did in the original story. I love that bit. Dare I even hope for a glimpse of Ginger!Batch?

Yes, yes, YES.

This is coming from an admitted angst junkie, but I do want SOME emotional fallout regarding the hiatus. My fear was the writers were going to totally gloss over the emotional impact, but it looks like that won't happen, happily. Yes, Sherlock had a damn good reason for doing what he did, but I don't want him to dismiss out of hand what John went through. Some sort of acknowledgement from him of John's pain would be nice.I don't want it to drag out for an unreasonable amount of time; after all, we have to have action, adventure, and a plot as well :)

Exactly! In real life, John wouldn't just faint and be over it. Sherlock is going to have to understand that he hurt John. I think the part I want to see is for him to realise how much he hurt John. Let's face it, Sherlock's not had friends and isn't used to having an emotional connection with someone. (you kind of get the idea that John is like one of two friends Sherlock's ever had.) He's not used to meaning so much to someone and I'm not sure he understands the level of hurt that John is going through. I want to see John get that through to him and for him to have that, "holy crap, I actually do mean something to someone!" moment that makes him want to fix this.

Thanks for posting this! I hope there will be some kind of fall out (though not too much) for when Sherlock returns. I really thought Watson let Holmes off far too easily in the original books.
