Strange question but ...

Sorry Mods if this is not allowed (please remove if it isn't) but I'm hunting someone who speaks French (or who even IS French) who may have access to the dubbed French language version of 02x03.

I am trying to get a transcript of a couple of scenes and my schoolgirl French is helping me a little (as is knowing these scenes off practically by heart in English) but the French language subtitles available don't match. They apparently are (or so says a French Canadian I have been talking to)  a translation of the English words and not a direct transcript of what the French actors are dubbing.

It does sound incredibly good (the voice matches are lovely) and some of the things replacing the English (e.g. Mrs Hudson talking about keeping blood samples in the fridge rather than body parts, Jim using 'vous' to Sherlock while John addresses him as 'tu') are very interesting. Sherlock's Sonny and Cher singing reference on the Roof of Bart's is also just talked over.

Oh, and BTW, whoever is dubbing Mycroft in 01x01 even manages to get his inflections into some of the conversation in the warehouse (the line about the 'happy announcement' - in French he is instead talking about a marriage) which can't be easy.

I seem to have been hearing that when John breaks down at the cemetery, where we got 'Just stop this' the French is saying something about it not being funny (ce n'est pas drole).

I also think I heard something earlier about him calling Sherlock a child (when we got 'sometimes I didn't even think you were human). That was too fast for me to do anything else with.

You were right; John does tell Sherlock that he's not funny when he's practically begging him to come back (French!Sherlock would most likely get punched by French!John after the hiatus). As for John calling Sherlock a child, it didn't happen in this scene. That part was pretty much the same thing as in the original version.

Here's the French transcript, followed by my translation (I tried translating word for word, so it's not that...pretty).

The rest is mostly correct, just a couple of missing accents or tiny mistakes. It looks like you remember a lot of your schoolgirl french! :-)

A lot of the problem I am having is with the accents the dubbers are using. Even so, with good hearing, the literal transation subtitles, Google Translate and my old Harrap's I am having fun. Going to give up for tonight but I will carry on tomorrow and post some more. then.

The funny thing about all of this is that after a while it doesn't even seem strange for Sherlock and John to be speaking French at all. If you ignore the lipreading it has been very cleverly dubbed and the voice artists have the nuances and the timing (to go with gestures or facial expressions) down excellently.

I was listening to it in Spanish, and that really was odd (Sherlock has a strange voice, John isn't bad).

What I would really like now is to listen to it in Italian, German and Russian (and to get people on translating their version to see the differences as we have with the French).

Yep, that's correct. "Si" can also mean "yes". I think it's mostly an european thing, because in Canada we very rarely (if eever) use it that way.
